About Us
Founded in 2004, Building Markets’ mission is to build markets, create jobs and sustain peace in developing countries by championing local entrepreneurs and connecting them to new business opportunities.
Operating in Afghanistan, Haiti and Liberia, and formerly in Timor-Leste, Building Markets has redirected over $1.1billion into these local economies and created more than 118,000 jobs. Its innovative projects help local entrepreneurs engage with global supply chains through access to tenders, training, and other business development services. In 2010, the Skoll Foundation recognized Building Markets as one of a handful of social enterprises affecting measurable and sustainable change in the developing world. U.S. President Obama awarded the organization the G20 SME Finance Challenge prize at the annual heads of state gathering in Seoul, Korea in November 2010.
